Synopsis: Ages ago, the goddess Athena was served by fighters called Saints who channeled the power of the Cosmos within them. Now a youth named Seiya has trained to become a Saint himself by earning the mystical Cloth of Pegasus. He is joined by other Saints with Cloths of their own to fight for Athena.

Anime vs Manga

First off, I would recommend either reading the manga or watching the original anime (which is just called Saint Seiya). The manga of course doesn't contain any filler episodes or filler characters, but it also doesn't have an awesome theme song!:D I'd like to be able to state all of the differences, but unfortunately, I have not been able to find all of the Saint Seiya manga online anywhere. The main difference is that the anime added an arc (the Asgard Arc/second arc and had to adapt the final arc into OVAs, which I'll explain in a minute).

Songs

The original anime never adapted the last story arc until around the early 2000s (the anime was originally made in the mid-late 80s), which created the three Hades Chapter OVA series. The first, Sanctuary, has 13 episodes, the second, Inferno, also has 13 episodes, and the 3rd, Elysium, only has 5 episodes. If you want to read/see the original series, I would just read the manga or watch the original series+Hades OVAs.

Story:

It's an older anime with older animation that I would consider a classic. It focuses on five main heroes who are bronze saints and protectorates of the reincarnation of the Goddess Athena, our main hero being Seiya the Pegasus Saint. The story is heavily influenced by Greek mythology, but there allusions to other mythologies as well. As a fan of Greek mythology, I was able to have aha moments like 'Yeah, I know how that myth goes' and stuff like that. They do explain a lot on the myths they use, and most of the ones they do use are ones people have most likely heard. The story is almost nonstop action with mainly one on one fights. There is sometimes just a little bit of comic relief, but it's mainly action, fighting, and action. I really liked how the story developed and although some might call this anime 'the average Shounen' I really think it's more than that.

Okay, I will admit our main hero Seiya is kind of the typical Shounen protagonist: heroic, brave, self-sacrificing, sometimes pretty stupid and stubborn, but has a heart of gold and puts his friends and Athena before himself. Aside from him, I think a lot of the characters are likable and have unique personalities. I actually came to like the Gold Saints, the 'side characters,' even more than the Bronze Saints. I still like the Bronze Saints, I just like the Gold Saints more. And the Silver Saints? Well, let's just say.. They're not extremely important, even less so than the supposed side characters the Gold Saints. And even though they are all supposed to be on the same side, there is conflict among all of them in more ways than one.

This was more or less me explaining a little bit of each series and giving basic information, so I may maybe a part two since I really didn't explain why I like this series so much or what is so good about it. If anything, this is more like a guide to the Saint Seiya universe. Well, I hoped you enjoyed whatever this is and will tune in for next time with my next recommendation blog!
